<image:title>the borrowed classroom - Learning Cycle</image:title>
<image:caption>Tip #1: I recommend a netted cage that opens from the side. Mine only open on the top and so I have to disturb the caterpillars every time I clean the cage. The Monarch Butterfly Shop is one place to buy them.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/55135e20e4b0568058d44b46/1567101539735-DRET6SFQ8IZQ3O0UZFHT/plastic+plant+tray</image:loc>
<image:title>the borrowed classroom - Learning Cycle</image:title>
<image:caption>Tip #2: Caterpillars are small, cute, they eat a TON, and so they make a mess as well. Lay a plastic water tray on the bottom of your netted cage. You can buy them for less than a dollar at a local store, or reuse a gallon milk jug by cutting out the bottom! Repurposing materials and saving everything to reuse year to year is a great way to make this class project inexpensive.</image:caption>

<image:title>the borrowed classroom - Learning Cycle</image:title>
<image:caption>Tip # 3: You have to keep the food fresh in water, but you can’t leave the water open. Caterpillars aren’t good swimmers. One option is to reuse old pill jars. I drilled holes in the top to make a great portable and covered vase for my herbs. Pictured is organic rue with a young swallowtail caterpillar visible.</image:caption>

<image:title>the borrowed classroom - Learning Cycle</image:title>
<image:caption>Tip #4: Caterpillars are cold blooded therefore very sensitive to the lighting and temperature conditions. Try to keep them outside but not necessarily in direct sunlight for long periods of time. They can overheat as easily as they can be too cold. Natural lighting and conditions are the best! If they aren’t eating, that could be a sign they are not doing well. Consider putting them back in your garden.</image:caption>

<image:title>the borrowed classroom - Learning Cycle</image:title>
<image:caption>Tip #5: Organically grown herbs are the best way to go. Caterpillars grow nearly 3000x their original size. Imagine all the chemicals they would be ingesting if the herbs were sprayed with pesticides.</image:caption>

This volunteer committee, in conjunction with the town, has coordinated Arbor Day celebrations, free tree care programs for town residents and is actively involved in maintaining the health and expanding the the size of our urban forest.</image:caption>

<image:title>the borrowed classroom - Citizen Science: The Great Backyard Bird Count - Binoculars</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the things that hooks kids into birding is the binoculars! I haven’t tried out many different brands for students to use, but I do have a class set of these eFast kids folding binoculars. They are compact and easy to store. So far they’ve held up under typical wear and tear. They see far enough for simple birding trips around a schoolyard and I found them to be reasonably priced.</image:caption>

<image:title>the borrowed classroom - Citizen Science: The Great Backyard Bird Count - Field Guide</image:title>
<image:caption>I like Sibley’s field guide, although I do think the choice is personal. National Geographic, Peterson and others also publish guides. Get the latest version of whichever you choose and consider this: how heavy of a book do you want to be toting around with you on trips? Note, this book only covers eastern North America, so buy the right book for your region and which will cover your typical travels.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/55135e20e4b0568058d44b46/1580311596555-ZGNAADHBS8N0MITOB0ZM/trifoldguide_birds.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>the borrowed classroom - Citizen Science: The Great Backyard Bird Count - Folding Guides</image:title>
<image:caption>These folding guides are terrific to have in the classroom. If you consider student birding groups of 3: 1 spotter uses the binoculars, 1 collects data and 1 is in charge of the field guide and/or app, it will reduce cost and create reasonable work for every student. Make sure to buy the guides for your geographic region. These smaller guides are better than books for student use as they are laminated, easy to carry and include fewer birds (so it isn’t so overwhelming). I had a class collect data directly onto the guide with dry erase markers once. It worked really well!</image:caption>

<image:caption>My boys do get the ecotourism vacations and summer nature camps I didn’t get as a child, as well as a wide range at home to explore the creek and woods in our suburban neighborhood. We have a system of how to de-robe in the garage when they come home soaking wet and muddy from playing outside. We should’ve invested in a mudroom for our house!! This photo was taken on a hiking trip in Brevard NC.</image:caption>

My sweet neighbors do as well and have been around this neighborhood longer than I to see even more habitat fragmentation. Thank you to Cynthia & Tim Ellison for all of the wonderful, colorful, and thoughtful photos of the woods.</image:caption>

<image:title>Wildlife Encounters of a Homebody - Have You Ever Seen Vultures Snuggle?</image:title>
<image:caption>Both black and turkey vultures are common in the Piedmont of NC. To determine which species you are seeing, first check out the head. Red-headed vultures are turkey vultures vs. the black head of black vultures. While they soar, look at the underwings. A black vulture’s wing tips are white, while a turkey vulture’s underwing is two-toned from body to tips. To learn more visit The Cornell Lab. Photo Credit Bird Watching HQ</image:caption>

<image:caption>[LS.2.1.1-2.1.2] Students will explore one year in the life of the longleaf forest, including the fire cycle and its benefits to the health of the ecosystem. They will also investigate the individual life events of organisms native to our native pine forest. *May include live animals.</image:caption>
