Dragonfly Nature Programs provides in-school nature studies designed for young people, ages 2+. Lessons are designed to support each unique developmental stage. Inspiration for each month's lesson comes from NC itself: the seasons, our geography, and the plants & animals we share our human spaces with. Dragonfly Nature Programs allows student's questions and interests to direct their experience & hopes each study encourages students to explore the natural world, safely and respectfully on their own.

We have a large body of programming, so month after month, year after year, students are enjoying new lessons. We also grow with our students. As students age into older classrooms, the learning experience changes to meet their developmental needs. While our program lists feature a wide-range of lessons, they all have the same goal: to instill a love of learning and a love of our natural world!

While most of our clients host Dragonfly’s nature studies monthly, some select just a few each year. It's your choice! Because we serve such a wide range of schools, and a variety of age groups, pricing is variable. Scroll to the bottom of the page for general pricing information or email Rachel with questions.

Full Program List 2023-24

  • Dragonflies are invertebrate, insects. Students will learn the defining characteristics of insects by investigating both the anatomical adaptations and life cycles of dragonflies and their close relatives, the damselflies.

  • How is a fruit different from a vegetable? Students will explore common and not so common locally grown produce to learn plant anatomy and consider why farm fresh, locally harvested fruits and vegetables are important to their own bodies and to the environment.

  • Mammals are warm-blooded vertebrates. They vary greatly in size, habitat and behavior but all have characteristics in common. We will discuss common characteristics of native mammals and gain a better appreciation of this vertebrate group.

  • Evergreen plants stay green through all seasons of the year. But why, when others go dormant during the cold winter months? This nature study will dive deep, beyond basic tree anatomy, into the unique leaf structure and cones of our local coniferous evergreens.

  • This weather program celebrates the wonders of winter weather. We’ll introduce young learners to the water cycle, to cloud formation and celebrate one of the sweetest splendors of winter: snow!

  • At Dragonfly Nature Programs, February is always about the birds! The survival of birds is dependent on a healthy, thriving environment. Because of the variability of birds, they occupy many different habitats on every continent on Earth. We will compare the nesting behaviors and habitat needs of 3 different birds, common to the piedmont of NC.

  • Earth is our home; ours to care for and protect. This program is designed to connect young learners to some people who do just that: care for and protect our precious planet. This program will empower students to make choices that are good for themselves, our local environment and the planet.

  • There was a time when people thought birds flew to the moon each winter! Science has put that hypothesis to bed and now we know so much more about where animals go and why during their seasonal migrations. This month we consider the “whys” and the “wheres” of animal migration connecting our local environment to the whole planet Earth!

  • Herpetology is the study of reptiles and amphibians, two groups of cold-blooded vertebrates. We will investigate what these two groups have in common and how they are different in their anatomy, behaviors and life cycles. This program is a celebration of two really cool groups of animals!
