Children need clean air to breathe, safe water to drink, healthy food to eat, and toxic free places to live, learn, and play. Yet too many children are exposed to environmental hazards that can affect their health and development. The good news? Every one of us can help create healthier environments for children. In honor of that cause, I'm excited to celebrate Children's Environmental Health Day (CEH Day) on October 8.
Screech Owl Adaptability in a Changing Climate
Habitat loss is the greatest threat to all bird species and the screech owl is no exception. When we fell trees, we remove their nesting cavities, perches and shade. The changing landscape means their food sources aren’t as abundant. The same is true when we farm over grasslands. And when we treat our homes with pesticides, we poison their food supply. On top of these existing threats, climate change threatens to upend the survival of screech owls.
